Hello Friends,

You’ve probably heard whispers that Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, call it what you want) might cause vision problems. But what’s the actual truth?

This peptide has been a game-changer for countless diabetics and people struggling to lose weight. Headlines hail it as a miracle. But behind the success stories lurks a rare, and potentially devastating, risk:

Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION)

Basically, a sudden blockage of blood flow to the optic nerve that can cause permanent vision loss.

Recent studies have found that patients using semaglutide are more likely to develop NAION compared to those on other diabetes or weight loss medications. In a cohort study of 16,827 patients, the risk was over seven times higher for those prescribed semaglutide. The European Medicines Agency has acknowledged this link, labeling NAION as a “very rare” side effect of semaglutide.

So, should you be scared if you’re using it?

The truth is, NAION is still very rare. Most people taking Semaglutide won’t experience it. Recent regulatory updates estimate that NAION may affect up to about 1 in 10,000 people taking semaglutide.

But the risk is serious enough that you shouldn’t ignore it. Keep an eye out for any sudden vision changes and stay in close contact with your doctor.
